This post shares the journey of making a knitted gnome designed by Frau Hottinger and knitted by Nel Gernaat of the Johannesburg congregation.

These gnomes are made of pure wool. This often limits the colours that are available in South Africa. Once the colours of the body and the hat are selected the various parts are knitted. There are two options for knitting: knit flat panels and sew these together or knit in the round on 5 knitting needles. These have been knitted as flat panels.

Once the panels have been sewn together they are stuffed with (washable) soft toy stuffing. A piece a of flat-bar iron makes up the feet allowing the gnomes to stand upright.

Finally the face is embroidered and hair added.

In a next post some of the history of the Hottinger gmones will be shared.

The posts are by the people who spend the year preparing for the Advent Fair, making and crafting the things that go on sale or form the gifts the children look forward to at the end of a particular experience.
